about yaniza
Yaniza is a Jewish, Dominican and Black (Kittitian) acoustic pop artist from New York City. She sings in English and Spanish and usually has a huge smile on her face! Yaniza's tunes bring joy and sunshine to its listeners through catchy lyrics over ukulele or guitar. Her self-directed music videos also captivate her audience through images of positivity, happiness, and hope.
Yaniza initially grew her fanbase by posting acoustic covers of pop songs on YouTube, which have garnered over 500,000 views combined. Listeners liken her vibes to that of Corinne Bailey Rae and Colbie Caillat, the latter of which noticed Yaniza’s cover of her song, “Fallin’ for You,” on instagram. In 2020, Yaniza’s covers also gained attention from acclaimed music blogs; Glamour included her acoustic version of Becky G’s song, “Mayores,” in their Fan Covers series on YouTube. The latin-pop star raved about Yaniza’s harmonies and guitar skills, and said: “the overall vibe made me really happy, and her energy is also really happy. She also has a very contagious smile, which I love.” PopSugar included Yaniza’s version of Taylor Swift & Bon Iver’s “exile” in a list of covers that they deemed “equally as heartbreaking as the original.”
Posting covers paved a path for Yaniza’s original songs to shine. Following two studio albums, her first single, “Fly Away (Free Bird),” quickly became a fan favorite through its uplifting message and wholesome music video. The beachy tune was written by Yaniza and brought to life by GRAMMY nominated producers Gian Stone and Joe LaPorta. The song has amassed hundreds of thousands of streams across platforms, and a short clip of its chorus rapidly reached nearly one million views on TikTok, catching the attention of make-up brand, Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez. Thousands of listeners connected with the song and used it in their own videos on TikTok and Instagram Reels.
Yaniza’s 2022 single “Paris,” inspired by the unpredictability of life, was produced by Harper James of viral indie-pop duo, Eighty Ninety, with the guitar part written by folk artist, Will Shish. Yaniza’s latest album, “New Day,” produced by Kornel Sylwester, is truly an audio diary; each track depicts a different emotion brought on by one pandemic romance gone wrong, ending with the uplifting title track as a reminder that new beginnings arrive daily. “Happiness,” from her second album, “Secrets,” was used in a social campaign for Karisma Hotels, and played on The Children’s Hour radio station. “Contigo,” the dangerously catchy Spanglish bop also produced by Stone and Ben Rice, received air time on radio stations as well, including a live performance on Pocono 96.7.
In 2022, Yaniza was contacted to perform for luxury brand, Kate Spade, at their Cabana pop-up events around NYC. Early on in her career, she performed at acclaimed live music venues around the city, including favorites Rockwood Music Hall and Mercury Lounge, and guest appearances at B.B. King’s and Irving Plaza. She was named Artist of the Month twice at The Bitter End, and was a semi-finalist in the Celebration of Music Contest in 2019, and in the NY Coffee Music Project Competition in 2017. Yaniza branched out of NYC in 2019 with Sofar Sounds performances in Philadelphia and Washington DC, and went on her first tour. She played intimate venues across the US, as well as radio shows, and festivals like Musikfest, where Earth, Wind & Fire, The Chainsmokers, Phillip Phillips and many other household names headlined that same year. Yaniza signed with booking agency, Degy Entertainment, in 2020 and is fortunate to continue to actively perform all over the US. In addition to Kate Spade, Yaniza’s brand work also includes Brandy Melville, Breitling, Uniqlo, and Cordoba Guitars.
In between gigging, writing, and recording music, Yaniza doubles as a passionate educator. After teaching and working with children for 15+ years and earning a masters degree in early childhood education from Columbia University in 2020, she started her own business teaching kids ukulele and voice lessons, and remains in high demand. Her concentration in music education set her up with a great foundation for teaching music to young children. She has also made a few ukulele tutorials on YouTube, which continue to be met with gratitude from eager learners. In addition to running her own business, Yaniza has written music curriculum for many schools and programs, and created an online ukulele course for high schoolers with the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts in 2023. She joins a highly acclaimed faculty of course creators, including Sydney James Harcourt, who was in the original cast of Hamilton. Yaniza credits her own high school music teacher, Brian Letiecq at Beacon High School for her initial drive towards a music career, and she hopes to be a role model for budding musicians as well.
As Yaniza continues to inspire people through music & education, she is actively performing and writing new bops with the goal of encouraging listeners to find joy in every day life.
